Cistercian Monastery ruins - Ister-Granum
Pilisszentkereszt

The first monastery in Hungary was the monastery of the Cistercian Order in the Pilis, located in the southwestern part of the village of Pilisszentkereszt. The abbey was founded by Béla III, and the monastery was built next to an early Árpád settlement at the same time as the Esztergom Cathedral. The monastery included a fish pond fed by streams in the Pilis. Unfortunately, this monastery has not been preserved intact, and nowadays it is barely visible, only its foundations can be seen. Its excavation began in 1967 and lasted until the 1980s, under the direction of László Gerevich.
